Pressestimmen
“By turns antic and moving, lusty and tragic, A Widow for One Year is bursting with memorable moments.”—San Francisco Examiner-Chronicle “Wisely and carefully crafted . . . Irving is among the few novelists who can write a novel about grief and fill it with ribald humor soaked in irony.”—USA Today “Deeply affecting . . . The pleasures of this rich and beautiful book are manifold. To be human is to savor them.”—Los Angeles Times Book Review “A powerful tale to add to an already extraordinary body of work from a great American writer.”—Richmond Times-Dispatch “Masterful . . . powerful . . . Irving’s best books are Dickensian in their rich characters, plotting and language—and of course, in moving the reader. On the final page of A Widow for One Year . . . I literally burst out crying.”—Orlando Sentinel “A sprawling 19th-century production, chock full of bizarre coincidences, multiple plot lines, lengthy digressions, and stories within stories. . . . An engaging and often affecting fable, a fairy tale that manages to be old-fashioned and modern all at once.”—The New York Times “[Irving’s] characters can beguile us onto thin ice and persuade us to dance there. His instinctive mark is the moral choice stripped bare, and his aim is impressive. What’s more, there’s hardly a writer alive who can match his control of the omniscient point of view.”—The Washington Post Book World “In the sprawling, deeply felt A Widow for One Year, John Irving has delivered his best novel since The World According to Garp. . . . Like a warm bath, it’s a great pleasure to immerse yourself in.”—Entertainment Weekly “Enchantingly balances the haunting tug of grief with the lure of enduring love . . . Irving’s rich narrative and his sense of play result in a delicious collusion between author and reader.”—Raleigh News & Observer “Wonderfully satisfying . . . [Irving] tells this story with so much delight that it’s difficult for the reader not to be infected with the same kind of joy in the reading.”—The Dallas Morning News “As compelling as Garp . . . Which is to say it’s terrific. . . . His most moving book . . . John Irving is one of America’s great storytellers.”—San Jose Mercury News “Comic and tragic, brilliant, and moving . . . Crammed with all the wonderful characters, quirky situations and memorable coincidences that have made [Irving] so beloved by readers . . . A terrific read that will make you its willing slave, so captivating is its allure.”—Chattanooga Free Press “A feast . . . One of this storyteller’s richest works. . . . A rich, resonant tale.”—Austin American-Statesman “Irving is a writer whose keenest sensibilities have always fallen somewhere between Dickensian verbosity and Mad magazine mischief.”—Rocky Mountain News “Full of humor, heartbreak and lust.”—Newsday “Powerful . . . a masterpiece.”—St. Louis Post-Dispatch “A Widow for One Year delivers everything John Irving fans have come to expect from the beloved author of The World According to Garp: a funny, sad, sprawling saga full of oddball yet believable characters.”—Glamour “There’s only one thing wrong with John Irving novels: They have to end. Readers won’t easily part with the characters in his latest work, A Widow for One Year. . . . [An] exhilarating talent.”—The Tennessean “Moving and memorable . . . This novel marks a return to the deep but gentle examination of human nature that made Garp so successful.”—San Diego Union-Tribune “May be Irving’s best book . . . A remarkable achievement.”—Sunday Advocate (Baton Rouge, LA)

Schade.
I've read this book already and loved it so much I decided to buy it for a friend. The story is capturing and very Irving-like - a rollercoaster of a reading. The book arrived to me in a great shape, like new - the only problem I had with it is that the cover art was different than the one pictured on Amazon listing. Apart from that, all great.
I am a huge John Irving fan and I always look forward to his latest book. I was pleasantly surprised by Widow as he has never had a female main character in any of his well crafted novels. Ruth was a wonderfully drawn woman, so much depth and richness to her character and the world around her. This is the story of Ruth Cole, from her childhood thru her life as an adult and all the people that fill her life from start to finish. When Ruth is a young child she discovers her mother, Marion, having an affair with Eddie, the teenager hired to drive her father, a drunk and wildly popular children's author, around for the summer. After this her mother disappears from her life. Both Eddie and Ruth become authors as well. Eddie, not quite a popular author, never quite got over his affiar with Ruth's mother and thus writes about it in every one of his novels. Ruth, on the other hand, is well known and loved. The book begins to take off when they meet again, after Eddie is asked to open a reading for Ruth. Their lives once again become entertwined as they both search for answer about Marion's disappearance and life. The novel also centers around Ruth's relationship with her father. The plot is engrossing and well rounded. This novel is full of the things that Irving fan's have come to expect and love. Widow has become one of my favorite Irving novels - sitting next to Garp, Owen Meany and Cider House Rules. This book deserves to be savored like a fine wine.
John Irving's "A Widow for One Year," perhaps his best work since "The World According to Garp" 20 years ago, concerns itself with familar John Irving territory - a dysfunctional family caught in a sea of grief resulting from a terrible tragedy. Anyone familar with John Irving knows that dysfunctional families is Irvings forte and "A Widow for One Year" demonstrates, without a doubt, that Mr. Irving may have no equal when writing stories of this nature. There are many levels to this novel, none of which can be appropriately discussed for this review. Ruth is the central character in Mr. Irving's novel. We are introduced to her at age 4 and continue on with her until Ruth is in her 40's. Ruth's story centers around her mother, Marion, who abandons her and her father at age 4 - Marion cannot cope with the tragic death of her 2 sons as well as the unhealthy relationship she has with Ted, her husband. Ruth, Ted and Marion, as a unit, wer! e dysfunctional. With Marion gone, Ted and Ruth are dysfunctional. And, as each get older, both Ruth and Ted try to manage with their own demons and dysfunctions. The sight alone of Ruth, at age 4, witnessing her mother having sex with the assistant her father hired to help him is enough to leave Ruth scarred. Interestingly, the novel focuses not only on Ruth, but also the assistant, Eddie and the father Ted - all of whom become writers. Infact, all the characters in this work are writers which makes this work highly personal. There is an interesting passage when Mr. Irving talks about imagination versus reality - can a writer imagine what is real? This alone could be discussed at great length and it is just one of the many areas which Mr. Irving explores that result from his personal encounters. Perhaps that is why "A Widow for One Year" is extraordinary - it appears not only highly personal but tackels an arena Mr. Irving knows well. Perhaps the one flaw ! in this work may be the ending which appeared to be too exp! ected, too easy. Nevertheless, this book should be a definite candidate for the National Book Award. Brillantly written and conceived, Mr. Irving writes about issues to be discussd amoung scholars and writers for years - perhaps placing this book in what one may call, "the classics."
